Michelle D. Young
Professor of Educational Leadership, Curry School of Education, University of Virginia; Executive Director, University Council for Educational Administration
Nominee: Robert C. Pianta
Michelle D. Young’s scholarship focuses on how school leaders and school policies can support equitable and quality experiences for all students and adults who learn and work in schools. She is the recipient of the William J. Davis award for the most outstanding article published in a volume of the Educational Administration Quarterly. Her work is published in highly ranked peer-review journals, including the Educational Researcher, the American Educational Research Journal, and the Journal of Educational Administration. She recently edited the first Handbook of Research on the Education of School Leaders.
The organization she leads, UCEA, is an international consortium of research institutions with master and doctoral level programs in educational leadership. As Executive Director, Young works with universities, practitioners, professional organizations, and state and national leaders to improve the preparation and practice of school and school system leaders and to develop a dynamic base of knowledge on excellence in educational leadership. Young’s work has significantly increased the focus of education research on leadership preparation, and brought that research to bear on the work of policy makers. Young was recently appointed to co-chair with Joseph Murphy and James Cibulka the revision of national educational leadership and preparation and practice standards.
